Thomas Hill's romanticized painting of the Golden-Spike Celebration at Promontory Utah in 1869.
A description of this painting (and a photograph of what really took place that day) can be found at About.com.

Huntington-Hopkins Hardware Store (reproduction)

Two of the four original investors who funded the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad between Sacramento and Promontory Summit (the western half of what would become the Transcontinental Railroad) were Collis P. Huntington and Mark Hopkins.   They owned a hardware store in Sacramento, and apparently made a lot of money selling supplies to gold prospectors.   The store was demolished in 1970 as a result of the construction of I-5, but has been reconstructed on a new site near the Railroad Museum.   According to the California State Parks website, "The building has been remodeled after the 1861-1877 exterior appearance of the store.   The inside of the store is typical of a hardware store of the mid-19th century."

Along the Sacramento and American Rivers

An old section of the city, near the Sacramento River.

The Delta King anchored in the Sacramento River near the RailRoad museum.
Open to the public; includes a restaurant where Doug, Ginny, and I ate lunch.
The ugly building in the background is apparently an insurance company.
